High Point University Club Sports

On Wednesday, July 15th, High Point University Intercollegiate Club Sports (ICS) program Director of Athletics, Dr. Stephen Denny announced Michelle Shaw was named as the program's new head cheerleading coach. 

Shaw, a collegiate cheerleader, later became the spirit coordinator for cheerleading and pom at her alma mater East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. She also served as the mascot coach and as the Spirit and Traditions Director for the Tigers in 2021-22.

In June 2022, Shaw was named as the Coordinator of Student Leadership, Development, and Activities at East Central University. With that role, she served as Coordinator for Greek Life, an advisor for Student Government Association and worked directly with student and community planning. A lifelong advocate of sports, she served as the assistant track coach for high jump, long jump and hurdles at Sulphur High School in Sulphur, Oklahoma, from 2020-22.  

A key component of Shaw's experience is her ability to connect with student organizations, develop emerging leaders, and coordinate campuswide initiatives. 

In her role as cheerleading coach for the HPU ICS program, Shaw will be able to combine her passions for collegiate cheerleading, spirit program leadership, student development, campus engagement and athletic coaching experience. Her diverse professional background provides a strong foundation to develop a cheerleading program focused on student-athlete growth, Panther pride and a vibrant team culture campuswide.

Shaw’s experience provides a perspective that extends beyond the sidelines. She will be able to build enthusiasm and create meaningful engagement opportunities for an HPU ICS program that is committed to cultivating community throughout the campus.

Furthermore, Shaw’s background in student development and campus programming provides the HPU ICS cheerleading program with the opportunity to develop complete student-athlete experience, build relationships across campus and create growth opportunities for cheerleaders as energetic ambassadors.

Shaw, who possesses these leadership qualities, will be an asset as the HPU ICS program continues to strengthen its visibility and impact.
