The High Point University men's club lacrosse team (3-2), coming off a home win against Virginia Tech D2, fell just short to rival Elon University, 7-6, Friday night at Vert Stadium.
The Panthers, who defeated Elon 19-7 during fall action, got off to a strong start after scoring their first goal a few minutes into the first quarter. Elon tried to tie the score 1-1, but Panthers goalie
Mac Daly shut the Phoenix down early.
Shortly after HPU's first goal, defenseman
Geoff Arrasate caused a turnover on the defensive end and found Jack Sudin in transition, who then netted the Panthers second straight goal.
The Panthers went into the second quarter hot, but so did the Phoenix. Elon scored back-to-back goals within the first five minutes of the quarter. While High Point tried to responded with a quick goal of its own, attacker
Jake Hagen went down with an injury in the crease. Hagen, however, would reenter the game and scored with 12 minutes left in the second quarter.
HPU sophomore Josh Teliska then scored a goal of his own, giving the Panthers the lead once again. With 2:41 remaining in the second quarter, Sudin, a senior, further extended the lead for HPU going into the half.
In the third, the Panthers scored a quick goal, their fifth of the game, and Daly once again shut down Elon's offensive with back-to-back saves. Elon would tie the game once again late in the third.
The fourth quarter was back-and-forth. High Point scored its sixth goal less than a minute into the quarter, but Elon returned with two goals of its own, taking the lead and never looking back. Although HPU had a few scoring opportunities during the game's last two minutes, the offense turned the ball over on two straight possessions and could not get a clean shot off.
HPU will play at Davidson College March 8th before hitting the road to travel to Central Michigan March 20th.
