Triumphs by Women’s Basketball, Softball Highlight HPU Intercollegiate Club Sports Weekend

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The women's basketball and softball teams, which came through with wins over Triad rival Elon, highlighted the High Point University Intercollegiate Club Sports program for games that took place between March 9-15. 

The Panthers' women's basketball team notched a win on a jumper by Victoria Lavargna with five seconds left in the contest. On the softball diamond, in the home spring opener, High Point combined for 19 runs in the two games on Saturday against Elon, outscoring the Phoenix 10-2 in the first game and 9-1 in game two. 

The High Point University Intercollegiate Club Sports program also competed in men's hockey D3 action at the AAU College Hockey National Tournament and baseball. The following is a recap of the week's action: 

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY (D3)

March 11 | vs. Columbia, W, 13-7

March 13 | vs. Springfield College, L, 7-4


The High Point University Intercollegiate Club Sports men's D3 hockey team saw its run in the as the ninth seed in the 2026 AAU College Hockey National Tournament come to a close following a 7-4 setback to Springfield College on Friday evening.

The Panthers, who traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., opened the tournament with a 13-7 victory over Columbia University on Wednesday evening. In the victory, High Point came through with 56 shots, including a 22-shot outing in the first period. The Panthers scored 12 goals in the final two period, including seven in the final frame. Grady Murphy led the way for the Panthers' offense, netting two goals.

High Point faced off against a familiar foe in the second game of the tournament, going head-to-head with Liberty. The Panthers emerged with 25 shots in the game, scoring their lone goal of the game in the second, which came off the stick of Colin Donovan following a pass from Nick Fallon.

Looking to keep their hopes alive against Springfield College, the Panthers scored four second period goals to tie the game at four-all starting the third. Springfield College scored three unanswered, despite nine shots in the third, to secure the victory. High Point led the way with 34 shots on the night.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

March 12 | vs. Elon, W, 46-44

Victoria Lavargna converted a pass from teammate Hailey Mannella with five seconds left on the clock to give the High Point University Intercollegiate Club Sports women's basketball team a 46-44 victory over rival Elon when the two clashed at the Millis Center on Thursday evening. The win results in the second under interim head coach Matt McCarthy in High Point's last three outings. 

SOFTBALL

March 14 | vs. Elon, W, 10-2 / W, 9-1

The High Point University Intercollegiate Club Sports softball team made its home debut on Saturday, hosting Elon in a doubleheader at Armstrong Park. The Panthers, who opened the spring season by taking on Guilford on March 8th, were looking to return to the win column after a series of setbacks to Guilford by scores of 10-3 and 11-3. 

High Point combined for 19 runs in the two games on Saturday against Elon, outscoring the Phoenix 10-2 in the first game and 9-1 in game two. Sophia Pierangeli provided the pop in the High Point lineup with five RBI and a home run. 

The two-game sweep marked the sixth of the season for High Point, which moved its record to 13-4-1 on the season. The Panthers are a perfect 10-0 at home this season. 

BASEBALL

After conducting a three-game sweep of Elon, which included a four-run ninth inning in a come-from-behind victory on Sunday, the High Point University Intercollegiate Club Sports baseball team hosted Tennessee over a two-day stretch on March 13th and 14th. 

The Panthers faced Tennessee in the opening game of the series on Friday night, falling by a 6-3 margin. The two teams returned to Williard Stadium on Saturday morning with the Vols claiming the second game of the series by a 5-3 score. 

Tennessee limited the Panthers' offense to the second-fewest single-game run total all season, completing the series sweep with a 16-1 win in five innings in game three.
